About CP80
A port is a virtual connecting point that a computer uses to talk to another computer. A computer has 65, 536 ports it can use in inter-computer communications. Yet only one is used for all internet traffic.
Think of it this way. On a television set, would we think of putting Sesame Street, CNN, and hardcore porn all on the same tv channel? No. We separate content into different channels, and then make those channels available to the public at different access levels. "Adult" material is not accessible over public airwaves. These are viewed only when a special adult package is purchased.
CP80 calls for the same organiztion on the internet. Let's take one of those 65,000 ports and dedicate it as the "adult" port for internet traffic. In order to view the adult material, an adult would have to turn on (or subscribe to) this port.
Thus homes, businesses, and public institutions can shut off the "adult port" and provide clean internet access to their users. They can avoid the lost productivity and other evils that come along with internet porn. At the same time, any adult who wishes to view or publish this material has the freedom of speech to do so. All they need to do is simply turn on the "adult port."
When you think about it, it just makes sense. Itching to know more? Go ahead and check out my Myth/FAQ's section, as well as the official CP80 site. Also check out the propsed legislation by CP80 entitled the Internet Community Ports Act.
